Hackers have exposed a flaw in Google’s Gmail App for Android that has enabled them to access Gmail accounts with an astounding 92% success rate by simply exploiting a weakness in smartphone memory technology and disguising malicious software as another downloaded App.
The “research” was presented at a cybersecurity conference in San Diego co-hosted by Michigan & California Universities. Other Apps hacked include those of Hotels.com, Chase Bank and Amazon but the Gmail App appears to have been the easiest with the Amazon App rated the hardest. While the “hacks” were carried out on the Android platform, the researchers believe that other operating systems such as Windows and Apples iOS system could be similarly vulnerable.
