Former Chief of General Staff, General Lord Dannatt has said that Britain must embrace Syrian President Assad if there is to be any chance of defeating IS, suggesting that the West needs to seek his cooperation in order to launch air strikes against the Islamist jihadists. General Dannatt’s remarks coincide with US General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, calling strikes inside Syria “necessary to defeat the organisation”.
Ironically both General's comments both come nearly a year to the day after UK PM David Cameron’s commons defeat, then to authorise strikes against Assad’s regime itself. However, General Dannatt's views have been denounced by Defence Secretary, Philip Hammond who has said that joining forces with Bashar Assad would not be 'practical, sensible or helpful'. Like he would know he has only been doing the job a couple of weeks - suddenly he is a defence expert! (Picture Credit: Fordhampoliticalreview.org)
